cheer it up…
eight tips to create a cheery, welcoming home

Cheery Decor

Cheer up! The days are getting longer and we’re looking forward to spring. Breathe some life and cheer into your home during the last days of winter to create a warm, welcoming environment perfect for relaxing and recharging. Home is where the heart is, and it’s the little things that count, so we’ve got some little ideas to bring some cheer to your space right now.

  • Set out a snack
Fill up those decorative bowls and baskets with healthy, nutritious, organic fruits. Yes, even the fancy, stylish ones! You’ll benefit from the handy, healthy snacks, plus all that colorful bounty sitting out looks and feels good.
  • Frame your family
OK, frame your family photos and get them out there. Grab some of your favorite shots and put them in pretty frames. You don’t need to have a gallery wall of family photos, try slipping a small framed photo between the books on a shelf. Those happy memories are guaranteed smile makers.
  • Mix and match
Add some color to your world with fun florals and bold patterns. They don’t have to be perfect matches, so long as the colors and styles coordinate. The mix will create light and laughter in your space and make it feel more comfortable. Decorative pillows and throws are an easy way to add a punch of color and pattern.
  • Practice aromatherapy
Light a scented natural candle, or simmer a pot of potpourri on the stove. Or go all out and bake bread or cookies. A home that smells as good as it looks is a wonderful place to be.
  • Write it out
Put those chalkboards to good use. Sure, you can jot down your grocery list and to-do’s, but why not add some cheery, uplifting messages as well. Try a simple “I love you” for your sweetie or kids. Imagine waking up to see “have a great day!” on the kitchen noteboard. Got writer’s block? Try a great, big smiley face instead.
  • Flowers
Yes, it’s cliché, but it’s true. Nothing makes a room feel quite so cheery as a bright bouquet. It doesn’t have to be big and fancy either, just a few blooms tucked into a favorite bottle or vase will do the trick.
  • Corral the clutter
Nothing makes a space feel quite so “down” as clutter. Look around your space and find ways to deal with the excess stuff – store it elsewhere, add pretty baskets or bins, get rid of it.
  • Light it up
Ensure there is plenty of light – both natural and artificial. That means overall lighting and task lighting. Open those heavy drapes and let the sunshine in. Replace those old bulbs with daylight CFLs or LEDs and turn them on to create a brighter, happier room.

Spring is a perfect excuse to improve your space for you and your family. A fresh coat of paint, some home-grown herbs and tackling that organizational project can all go a long way to making your space feel more like home. It truly is the little things that count. What are your favorite ways to cheer up your home?
