Summer is almost over and that means it’s time to start thinking dorm rooms. The standard image of a college dorm room may be full of inexpensive furniture, disposable décor and pizza boxes, but we think it’s time for a change. Today’s students are far more eco-aware and a few well-chosen pieces can easily see a student through their entire college career and even carry over into their first home of their own, or handed down to a younger sibling or friend. A green dorm? We think it’s a great idea!
Get your grad off to a green start with dorm décor that will make their space more comfortable, personal, practical, and most of all, sustainable. Here’s how!
Quality bedding is worth the investment. When you’re running on low sleep, making sure your bed is as comfy as possible is a good thing! Plus, good bedding lasts longer. While you’re at it, make sure there are plenty of bed pillows and throw pillows to spare. Not only do they look good, but they’re an easy way to transform the bed into a couch for daytime guests (or super comfy lounging while studying).
Dorms are notoriously plain and boring spaces, add some personal touches to make it feel more like home. Put some favorite photos in attractive frames to arrange on a shelf or desk and add a cool area rug to define the space and cover up that dorm room floor. Why not upgrade the wall art from the usual posters to something with a bit more interest like a cool mirror framed in reclaimed metal?
College life shouldn’t be austere. Add a cozy throw for curling up with late night reading; also handy for covering up any less than ideal dorm chairs! For shower time, opt for an oversize bamboo towel for extra softness and coverage for those shared bathrooms.
Let’s face it, college students usually live on pizza and ramen; instead of fighting it, embrace it. Equip your college-bound grad with some green dorm dining supplies like reusable plastic dishware, a far better choice than paper plates! Take their ramen to new heights in their very own ceramic noodle bowl, just for real cool factor.
