If you’ve been in the same home for a long time, it’s easy to start feeling like things are just not as nice as they once were. Spring is the perfect time for a little spruce up, and we’re not talking about a full-blown remodel. We’re talking a sort of quick pick-me-up to take your home from drab to fab with minimal effort and get you loving where you live again.
Fix it up
Start by fixing the little things that need fixing. Take care of that squeaky door hinge, mend that torn screen and patch that hole from when you rearranged your artwork. Nothing makes a home feel less loveable than a few unfinished fixer upper projects.
Paint it up
A fresh coat of low- or no-VOC paint can make a huge impact. Whether you go for a complete color change, add an accent wall or just freshen the existing color, covering up those patches, and brightening up your space will do wonders for how your home looks and feels.
Dress it up
Take a look at your window frames – inside and out. Is the paint in good shape, or do they need to be sanded down and redone? Consider a high contrast glossy paint for your interior frames to make them really pop. Do the same for your doorframes as well. Check out the low- and no-VOC paints to keep it green.
Clean it up
Even with regular mopping and vacuuming, floors get grungy over time. Carpets and upholstery gets dingy, wood floors get dull, even tile loses its luster. But it’s a quick fix. Shampoo your carpets and upholstery, or have a pro come in and do them for you (and yes, that includes area rugs!) If you’ve got tile or wood, give them a good deep cleaning (which may include stripping off old wax or coatings) and a fresh polish so they really shine. While you’re at it, give your wood furniture a good clean and polish as well. You’ll be surprised at the difference!
Decorate it up
Freshen up your décor – add some cool accents, try a new floor lamp, get a new table. It doesn’t have to be big, it just has to be different than what was there before. To get even more bang for your buck, “shop” your own home – look in other rooms for items to swap around for a fresh new look.
And a few ideas for a really quick fix home pick me up:
- Put out fresh flowers
- Light some scented candles
- Declutter and rearrange your rooms
If you’re just not feeling the love in your home anymore, or your place looks tired and worn to you, it doesn’t mean it’s time to move, or even time to remodel. It can be as simple as a few small projects to get you back to loving where you live. Whether your home is a wide-open loft, a suburban sprawler or a tiny studio apartment, you’ll find a quick freshen up makes it far more welcoming.
