Clutter… no one really likes the word; the trouble is, everyone has their own idea of what clutter is. We all have our own spot on the clutter continuum; anything too far off from our comfort zone will not only be annoying, but it will make our spaces feel more stressful and we’ll be less productive. Right now, all the organized people are nodding and saying “That’s right!” Meanwhile, those who function well amidst their clutter are confused; they like organized chaos. And that’s OK too. So how do you achieve the organized part, especially in an office space where organization and productivity are expected?

Keyword: Organized

If your space truly is chaotic, with piles of papers everywhere and no rhyme or reason to anything, it’s time to take a moment and remember that the trick to this method is organizing the chaos just a bit. It may feel like herding cats at first, but the simplest way to put it is: a place for everything and everything in its place. That doesn’t have to mean an alphabetized, labeled system. It could be as simple as a pencil cup, stackable letter trays and simple bins that allow you to put like with like. As long as there is a method to the madness, you’re on the right track!

Embrace cork

A corkboard or pinboard is about to become your new best friend for good reasons. They’re cute, trendy, affordable, easy to personalize and they’re absolute powerhouses for keeping your clutter controlled. Got inspirational images? Stick ‘em up there where you can actually see, and be inspired by them! Got important tickets? Tack ‘em in an upper corner so they’re visible and accessible. Will the board still look cluttered? Yep, but it will help keep all the little bits and pieces off of your desk top and out of your drawers and put them where you can see and use them instead of forget them.

Shelves and storage and bins, oh my

Whatever job you do at your office, it’s important to actually have the space to do it. If you have to move things around to get to your workspace, it’s time to clean up the act a bit. This is where shelves, storage spaces and even attractive baskets and boxes can be your best buds. Following the like-with-like method, just putting all of your assorted clutter into attractive storage gets it off your desk, but still keeps it handy.
