savor the splendor of the last days of summer

The lazy days of late summer. Long, hot days followed by nights that are perfect for being outside, just cool enough to feel good as the sun goes down. After summer’s beach-filled dazzle, these days feel easy and relaxed, like the entire world is winding down, preparing for fall. It’s time to fit in some last parties on the patio, a little more dining on the deck. It’s time to gather good friends together and enjoy all that life has to offer. If summertime is all about fun in the sun, then late summer is like a lingering sunset, where everything feels calm and serene. This is the romance of late summer.

This is the time for simple gatherings. The local farmer’s markets are full of late summer produce; take advantage of the seasonal bounty and plan a menu around a classic caprese. Fresh, locally-produced mozzarella, ripe organic tomatoes, and some fresh basil are unbeatable in August. Add a great bottle of your favorite wine, a loaf of freshly baked bread and some olive oil and herbs for dipping and you’ve got the makings of a perfect, simple summer menu. Just add a few of your closest friends, and get ready to savor all that life has to offer!
