The bedroom is perhaps the most personal room in your home. It’s where you get dressed, unwind, sleep and dream. It should be a place that makes you feel rested, invigorated and calm. All too often, however, our bedrooms are the last room we think about; they end up cluttered, disorganized and serving as hidden storage for things that don’t fit anywhere else. Add in double-duty use like a home office, gym or TV room and it gets even more difficult to make our bedrooms the sanctuary they should be. But that’s about to change. We’ve written about styling your bedroom, making it more masculine, trying an all-white palette and setting it up for better sleep. Today, we’re going to look at ways to give achieve a bedroom makeover.
Yes, painting is a pain, but it’s also the easiest way to create a totally different look and really kick off your bedroom makeover. If you’ve been in your space for a long time, or it’s been years since those walls were painted, this should be your first choice for freshening your room. Consider painting an accent wall if you don’t want to do the whole thing.
The bed is the biggest thing in your room, or at least the most important. A simple change of linens can create an entirely new look. Invest in a quality comforter or blanket and a simple duvet cover and your bed will always look inviting. Add quality organic sheets and some accent pillows to finish the look.
Forget that ceiling light. Really. If you simply have to have overhead lighting, install a dimmer switch. Far better to invest in some table lamps for your bedside tables and a floor lamp for your reading chair or overall lighting. Make sure to pick up CFL or LED bulbs in a natural daylight color spectrum to really make the most of your lighting. Good lighting is like a facelift to your bedroom makeover.
Bedrooms attract clutter, so make it easy to keep things neat. Organize the closet and really look at the type of clutter you collect, then figure out solutions that help corral the mess. If it’s laundry, pick up stylish sorters, your phone, keys and other daily needs can go in an attractive wooden bowl on your dresser or nightstand. Consider under the bed boxes for out of season clothes or spare bedding. Really think about what will help you organize the space and keep it looking its best, then do it.
No bedroom makeover is complete without some art and accessories. This is your chance to be really personal with pretty frames on your dresser, or oversize art on your walls. Just make sure each piece goes with the room and makes you feel good about being there.
All done? Congratulations! You’ve just completed a bedroom makeover, now enjoy!
